Most of Elkaa works without an account. Here's exactly what the app does:
Scanning, history, favorites, recommendations, and adding products all work without an account. Search requires a free account — it's the only reliable way for us to know how many people use Elkaa, since the app has no analytics. If you create an account, we store your email address and a securely encrypted password (via our backend provider, Supabase) so you can sign in. Your email is never used for marketing, never shared with anyone, and isn't linked to your scan history or anything you submit.
You can permanently delete your account anytime from inside the app — go to Account → Delete Account. If you no longer have the app installed, email support@elkaa.app from your account's email address and we'll delete your account and data within 30 days.
Used to scan barcodes in real time, on your device. Live camera frames are never stored or sent anywhere.
Used to read a barcode from a photo you choose, or to attach a photo when you choose to add a new product (see below). Photos used just for barcode scanning are never uploaded.
Stored locally on your device only. This never leaves your phone and we never see it.
If a scanned barcode isn't in our data sources, you can optionally submit it yourself — name, brand, ingredients, nutrition info, and a photo. This is stored on our backend (Supabase) and shown publicly in the app and on this website, the same way Open Food Facts data is public. It isn't linked to your account or identity in any way.
To look up a scanned product, the app sends the barcode (or a search term you type) to Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts — free, independent, open databases — to retrieve product information. No account identifiers or personal data are included in these requests.
Stored locally on your device.
The app checks whether a newer version is available using Apple's App Store and Google Play's own update mechanisms. No personal data is sent as part of this check.
We do not collect analytics, do not use advertising, and do not track you across other apps or websites.
Children's privacy: Elkaa does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes: If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page.
